If Your Child Is Sick… Read This Before Asking For Antibiotics
If your child has a sore throat, cough, or a runny nose, it’s very common to think they need an antibiotic.
But most of the time… they don’t.
Most childhood illnesses are caused by viruses, not bacteria.
Antibiotics only work on bacteria—not viruses.
That means: COLDS, COVID, FLU, RSV and MOST SORE THROATS (especially with cough and runny nose) are viral and will not improve with antibiotics!
What I See in Practice:
Parents often worry when symptoms linger:
*Thick mucus
*Green or yellow nasal discharge
*A cough that lasts weeks
But this can still be a completely normal viral illness—not a sign your child needs antibiotics.
Many of these illnesses are self-limiting, meaning the body will recover on its own with the right support.
When ARE Antibiotics Needed?
Antibiotics are only helpful for true bacterial infections.
Why We Should Be Careful with Antibiotics:
Antibiotics are not harmless.
*Diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting
*Rashes or allergic reactions
*Disruption of the gut and immune system
Your child’s body is designed to heal and regulate itself.
Supporting that process is often more effective than overriding it.
A More Supportive Approach (what I recommend):
Instead of jumping to antibiotics, focus on supporting the body:
Foundational Support:
*Fluids- teas, electrolytes, broths
*Food- it’s OK if they want to eat less!
Fever Support:
*Staying close to your child
Herbal Support :
*Echinacea, helps reduce recurrence of infections
*Elderberry, helps support immune response
*Chamomile, calming, supports sleep and inflammation
*Ginger, warming, helpful for cough, sore throat, congestion
Symptom-Based Homeopathy
*Aconite – early illness, sudden onset, after cold exposure
*Belladonna – high fever, red face, intense symptoms
*Bryonia – dry, painful cough, worse with movement
*Pulsatilla – thick yellow/green mucus, clingy child
*Chamomilla – irritable child, pain feels intolerable
*Spongia – barking, croupy cough
Homeopathy works by stimulating the body’s own healing response, not suppressing symptoms.
The Key Shift:
You’re not doing nothing.
You’re:
*Supporting the immune system
*Helping your child feel better
* Allowing the body to resolve the illness naturally
The Bottom Line:
Most childhood coughs, colds, and sore throats:
*Are viral
*Get better on their own
*Do not need antibiotics
Sometimes doing less…is actually the best medicine!
