Bug Bites: What Every Parent Should Know

Bug Bites: What Every Parent Should Know

🦟 Bug Bites: What Every Parent Should Know

Summer is made for backyard barbecues, hiking, camping, beach days, sports, and evenings spent outdoors. Unfortunately, it’s also the peak season for mosquitoes, bees, wasps, ants, ticks, flies, chiggers, and other biting insects.

The good news? Most bug bites are harmless and can be safely treated at home with a combination of simple first aid, natural remedies, and—when needed—conventional medications.

Knowing what to do (and what to keep on hand) can help your child get back to enjoying summer much more quickly.

First Aid for Bug Bites

The first few minutes after a bug bite are often when children are most uncomfortable. Fortunately, simple measures usually provide significant relief.

Start with these basic steps:

✔ Wash the bite with soap and water.
Cleaning the area removes dirt and bacteria that could increase the risk of infection.

✔ Apply a cool compress for 10–15 minutes.
Cold helps decrease:

  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Pain and discomfort

Repeat as needed throughout the day.

✔ Discourage scratching.

Scratching may feel good temporarily, but it actually increases inflammation and can introduce bacteria into the skin, increasing the risk of infection.

Most bug bites begin improving within a few days.

Watch for Signs of Infection

Although uncommon, bug bites occasionally become infected.

Contact your healthcare provider if you notice:

  • Increasing redness that continues to spread
  • Warmth around the bite
  • Worsening swelling after the first day or two
  • Pus or drainage
  • Increasing pain
  • Fever

These symptoms may indicate a secondary bacterial skin infection that requires medical evaluation.

Natural Herbal Remedies

Many herbs have traditionally been used to soothe irritated skin, calm itching, and support the body’s natural healing process.

Topical Herbal Remedies

🌼 Calendula

Calendula is a favorite herb for bug bites.

It helps:

  • Support skin healing
  • Calm irritated skin
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Promote tissue repair

Calendula creams and salves are wonderful additions to every family’s summer first-aid kit.

🌼 Chamomile

Chamomile isn’t just a bedtime tea.

Applied as a cream or cooled tea compress, chamomile may help:

  • Calm itching
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Soothe irritated skin

🌼 Lavender

Lavender has long been used to:

  • Calm irritated skin
  • Soothe itching
  • Support healing

Lavender can be found in balms and can also be used in an essential oil form directly or diluted in a carrier oil

🌼 Chickweed

Chickweed has traditionally been used for:

  • Itchy skin
  • Inflamed bites
  • Irritated rashes

It can be especially soothing when itching is the primary complaint.

Herbs to Take by Mouth

Sometimes supporting the body’s inflammatory response from the inside can also be helpful.

🌿 Nettle

Traditionally used to support:

  • Allergic skin reactions
  • Itching
  • Inflammation

🌼 Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea may help:

  • Calm inflammation
  • Promote relaxation
  • Encourage restful sleep when nighttime itching becomes a problem

🌿 Burdock

Traditionally used to support:

  • Healthy skin
  • Inflammatory skin conditions

Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathy has traditionally been used for many common first-aid situations, including bug bites and insect stings.

Apis mellifica

Best for:

  • Bee stings
  • Mosquito bites
  • Fire ant bites
  • Hot, red, swollen bites
  • Burning or stinging pain
  • Symptoms that improve with cold applications

Ledum palustre

Best for:

  • Mosquito bites
  • Tick bites
  • Wasp stings
  • Puncture wounds
  • Bites with minimal swelling
  • Bites that feel cool to the touch
  • Symptoms relieved by cold applications

Hypericum

Best for:

  • Painful insect bites
  • Puncture wounds
  • Bites involving fingers, toes, lips, or other nerve-rich areas
  • Shooting or nerve pain
  • Tender wounds

Arnica montana

Best for:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Soreness
  • Tissue trauma after a bite or sting
  • Pain following injury

Keeping these four remedies together creates a versatile homeopathic first-aid kit for many common summer injuries.

Conventional Anti-Itch Treatments

Many families are able to manage bug bites with simple first aid, herbal remedies, and homeopathy. However, there are times when additional itch or inflammation relief is needed. Fortunately, several over-the-counter medications can provide quick, effective symptom relief.

1% Hydrocortisone Cream

Best for:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation
  • Itchy bug bites

What type of medication is it?

Hydrocortisone is a mild topical steroid.

It decreases the body’s inflammatory response, helping bites become less red, swollen, and itchy.

Hydrocortisone is usually the best choice when inflammation is the primary problem.

1% Pramoxine Cream or Lotion (Ages 2+)

Many parents have never heard of pramoxine, it a non-steroid anti-itch medication.

Best for:

  • Intense itching
  • Mosquito bites
  • Flea bites
  • Chigger bites
  • Insect stings

What type of medication is it?

Pramoxine is a topical anesthetic.

Instead of reducing inflammation like hydrocortisone, it temporarily numbs the nerve endings in the skin, often providing itch relief within minutes.

Many children finally stop scratching once pramoxine begins working, making it especially helpful at bedtime.

Examples include:

  • CeraVe® Itch Relief Cream or Lotion
  • Sarna Sensitive® Anti-Itch Lotion

Parent Tip

🔴 Red and swollen? Choose 1% hydrocortisone cream.

🦟 Very itchy? Choose 1% pramoxine cream or lotion.

Preventing Bug Bites Naturally

The easiest bug bite to treat is the one that never happens.

Simple preventive measures include:

  • Wearing lightweight long sleeves and pants.
  • Wearing closed-toe shoes in wooded or grassy areas.
  • Choosing light-colored clothing.
  • Eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed.
  • Using outdoor fans on patios and decks since mosquitoes are weak fliers and have difficulty flying in moving air.

These simple changes can dramatically reduce bug bites throughout the summer.

Natural Insect Repellents

Families looking for plant-based insect repellents have several options.

These include:

  • Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE)*
  • Citronella
  • Catnip
  • Lavender
  • Lemongrass
  • Peppermint
  • Cedarwood

*Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus has the strongest scientific evidence among plant-based repellents but should not be used in children under 3 years of age.

Keep in mind that natural repellents generally require more frequent reapplication than conventional insect repellents.

Plant Your Own Mosquito-Repelling Garden

One of my favorite ways to naturally discourage insects is by growing aromatic herbs around patios, decks, and outdoor play areas.

Wonderful choices include:

  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • Basil
  • Lemon balm
  • Peppermint
  • Catnip
  • Citronella grass

While simply growing these plants won’t eliminate mosquitoes, brushing against the leaves or gently crushing them releases fragrant oils that may help discourage insects nearby.

Even better, growing herbs teaches children where medicine comes from while encouraging gardening, outdoor exploration, and a lifelong appreciation for nature.

When Should You Seek Emergency Care?

Although most bug bites are harmless, some allergic reactions require immediate medical attention.

Call 911 or seek emergency medical care immediately if your child develops:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
  • Widespread hives
  • Repeated vomiting after a sting
  • Dizziness or fainting

These symptoms may be signs of anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction that requires immediate emergency treatment.

Natural remedies and homeopathy should never delay emergency medical care when a severe allergic reaction is suspected.
