Bedwetting

Bedwetting

Bedwetting?

The answer may not be in the bladder.

Emerging research suggests that vitamin D and saffron extract may help support some of the underlying factors associated with bedwetting, including sleep quality, nervous system development, and attention regulation.

Let’s take a closer look.

What Does Vitamin D Have to Do With Bedwetting?

Vitamin D may influence:

☀️ Sleep quality
☀️ Bladder function
☀️ Nervous system maturation
☀️ Hormones involved in overnight urine production

Several studies have found a link between low vitamin D levels and nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting).

Could Your Child Be Low In Vitamin D?

Risk factors include:

• Limited outdoor time
• Living in northern climates
• Darker skin pigmentation
• Low dietary intake
• Long winters
• Excessive screen time indoors

A simple blood test can measure vitamin D levels.

What About Saffron?

Saffron is one of the most interesting natural therapies being studied in children.

Research has shown benefits for:

🌿 Sleep quality
🌿 ADHD symptoms
🌿 Anxiety
🌿 Mood regulation

Because sleep, nervous system regulation, and attention can all play a role in bedwetting, some practitioners are beginning to explore saffron as part of a comprehensive approach.

While we don’t yet have strong studies showing saffron directly treats bedwetting, its effects on the underlying factors that contribute to bedwetting make it an intriguing option to consider.

The Biggest Bedwetting Causes Are Often Overlooked

When evaluating a child with persistent bedwetting, I often look beyond the bladder.

Common contributors include:

✔️ Constipation
✔️ Poor sleep
✔️ Mouth breathing
✔️ Enlarged tonsils
✔️ ADHD
✔️ Family history
✔️ Vitamin D deficiency

Bedwetting Is Rarely “Just A Bladder Problem”

The bladder is only one piece of the puzzle.

Looking at sleep, nutrition, bowel habits, nervous system development, airway health, and overall wellness often provides more answers than focusing on the bladder alone.

The Bottom Line

Vitamin D has emerging research supporting a role in bedwetting.

Saffron may offer additional support by promoting healthy sleep, calming the nervous system, and improving attention and emotional regulation—all factors that can influence nighttime dryness.

While more research is needed, saffron is generally well tolerated and may be worth discussing with your child’s healthcare provider as part of a broader plan.
